Domaine Humbert

Gevrey-Chambertin

Meet the producer

Since 1993, Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert, cousins of the Dugat family, have been successfully managing the Humbert Frères estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, continuing the family legacy into the fourth generation.

Pierre Yves Humbert has since taken over Frederic's role and now co-manages the winery with his uncle Emmanuel. Their ownership spans across 7 hectares, situated in the villages of Gevrey-Chambertin and Fixin.

Specializing in Pinot Noir, their esteemed collection includes Bourgogne Rouge Côte d’Or, Gevrey-Chambertin village, the premier crus of Poissenot and Estournelles Saint-Jacques, and the revered Charmes-Chambertin Grand cru. Annually, they produce between 30,000 to 40,000 bottles.

The Estate’s philosophy

A century ago, Emmanuel & Frederic’s grandfather, Fernand Dugat, alongside Domaine Magnien, spent each winter grafting different vines, meticulously selecting them for their disease resistance.

Consequently, today, these vines, approximately 80 years old, yield exceptional Pinot Noir grapes, complemented by younger vines averaging 50 years in age.

Their viticulture and winemaking philosophy avoids synthetic products whenever possible, and they proudly hold HVE 3 certification. All vineyard tasks and winemaking processes are meticulously synchronized with the lunar calendar and conducted by hand.

They utilize a straightforward Guyot training system and handpick grapes into small crates.

Their holdings include roughly 20 ares of Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, 2.5 hectares of Gevrey-Chambertin village (sourced from 7 different plots), 1.5 hectares of Premier Cru, and 1.5 hectares of Bourgogne, all within the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, specifically on the village's upper side.

Grounded in tradition and motivated by a desire to express the unique terroir, they practice selective sorting and manual selection. Cold pre-fermentation maceration for one week occurs in concrete tanks, with ongoing experiments using stainless steel tanks.

Grand Cru wines and Premier Crus are aged in 100% new oak, while Gevrey-Chambertin and Bourgogne Côte d’Or wines age in 40-50% new oak.

All wines (except Bourgogne Côte d’Or) undergo an 18-month aging process. Collaborating with esteemed cooperages such as Tonnellerie Raymond, Francois Freres, Seguin Moreau, and Rousseau, they use different oak each year to age each cuvée, adapting to the wine's typicity, with blending taking place post-fermentation.

Since 2014, they have abstained from fining or filtering their wines, highlighting the domaine's typicity, characterized by freshness. The winery cherishes old vines rooted in exceptional terroir.
