Domaine Buisson Charles
Meursault
Meet the producer
Established in the middle of the 20th century, the domain is located in Meursault and has been managed since 2001 by Catherine and Patrick Buisson.
The Buisson-Charles domain is of modest size - 6.3 hectares, including 4 hectares of Meursault village and Meursault premiers crus in diverse climates.
It is complemented by its ownership of plots in Volnay and Pommard, as well as its négoce activity with Corton and Chambertin for red wines, and Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Chablis Premier Cru and Grand Cru, Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru, and Corton-Charlemagne for white wines.
Even though Catherine and Patrick are managing the estate, they also have the privilege of seeing their son Louis return to the operation after obtaining his degree in winemaking engineering.
There is no doubt that he will be called upon to succeed his parents in the years to come. 2019 is the first vintage that he has entirely vinified.
The Estate’s philosophy
With vines ranging from 30 to 90 years old, these naturally low-yielding vines produce highly concentrated wines suitable for ageing, yet the estate also aims to offer wines that are approachable in their youth.
The estate prohibits itself from combating frost with polluting candles, never chaptalizes, plows only three times at most, moderately treats its vines without pesticides and according to a very strict bio-control schedule, in a highly targeted manner, or not at all in certain areas, and seeks to produce with yields 25% lower than what legislation allows. At this cost, according to this organic culture, only then is it permitted to produce wines in the absence of any oenological corrections.
This resolutely natural approach to the vine is intensely reflected in the white and red wines, all of which are vinified, aged, and bottled by the estate without fining or filtration.
The estate now cultivates nearly 4 hectares of Meursault and Meursault premiers crus in very diverse climates, allowing for the creation of a complex blend, the "Meursault vieilles-vignes," and isolating particular crus such as Tessons in the village, and Charmes, Cras, Bouches-Chères, Blagny La Pièce Sous Le Bois (in 2020), and Goutte d'Or in premiers crus. Plots of red and white Burgundy complement these, Volnay premier cru Santenots, and Pommard "En Chiveau," as well as a small production of Chassagne-Montrachet premiers crus En Remilly, Les Caillerets, and La Romanée until 2018, then Embazées starting from the 2020 vintage.
In 2015 and early 2016, the estate acquired new premises and expanded its cellars to work more finely on its cuvées during ageing, while considering extending the duration in barrels by a few months. It also increased the surface area owned by the estate by over one hectare with parcels located in Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault.
